So, it’s been just over two months since I’ve been working at Jericho Tattoo Emporium with the beautiful Hannah Calavera and Madame Silver, and it’s been an absolute blast so far. I didn’t think it was possible to feel so contented – being able to work with people who have a mutual understanding and love for the job is beyond refreshing.
I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Hannah around 4 years or so. I met her originally at Bournemouth Tattoo Convention, when I was only 6 months into my apprenticeship. She was working directly opposite where my boss at the time was set up. I went over to take a look at her work, and I just completely fell in love with it. That’s when I decided she was the lady to emblazon my chest! Even better when I found out that she was working in Reading at the time – just down the road from Oxford….
And since then she’s gone on to cover a lot more of my pasty-white living canvas with brightly coloured loveliness…
Over the years she’s been a huge inspiration for me. Being able to see her work progress over time has been an amazing experience. and now I get to see her work every day. And she has been no end of help to me, letting me try out her various tattoo machines, and offering tips here and there to help me continue to better my work. Over all, I couldn’t be happier with the direction things are heading.
Not only is the studio a little slice of heaven, but Cowboymod Emporium (the shop we’re based below) is a haven of vintage loveliness – filled with beautiful guitars, photography and various trinkets, collectibles and retro clothing… the list is endless. You can even get a pretty amazing haircut from James too – certainly a man of many talents.
The last month has been a bit of a roller coaster to say the least. A lot has changed, but all for the positive. I’ve altered my mindset completely because of it – don’t make long-term plans as much, embrace spontaneity, and enjoy the time you have as much as possible. And no matter how rubbish things get, they’ll be alright. Don’t stress. Complications are temporary – you can earn more money, but you can’t earn more time. Yada yada yada…
I’ve always been a massive worrier, but I’m definitely making steps to change that.
All in all, things are good. Got quite a lot to be excited about to help get me by, and a bunch of fantastic people making every day pretty damn amazing.
Bring on the New Year! Lots of new tattoos to begin, and lovely people to meet…
